I hope this post finds you all in great spirits! Today, I’d love to kick off a discussion about the essential features that we truly appreciate in our basic and dumb phones. While many of us have spent time with smartphones, there’s something wonderfully refreshing about the simplicity and reliability of a phone that just focuses on the basics.
So, what’s your favorite feature of your dumb phone? Is it the long battery life, the ease of use, or perhaps the unbeatable durability? Maybe you cherish the calmness that comes with less screen time. Whatever it may be, I’d really love to hear about it!
Let’s share our thoughts and celebrate the charm that these phones bring to our lives. Looking forward to reading your responses!
I love the lack of distractions the most. Being barraged with a million notifcations a day is just annoying when you have a smart phone, especially since a lot of them are just designed to make you waste more time.
For me, the most important “feature” a dumbphone offers is the lack of ability to use social media, and other platforms which deliver addictive, meaningless content.
As I wrote about in this blog post, after reading various studies, and reflecting on my personal experience with smartphones, I realized that my ability to focus has decreased from what it once was.
While I’ve never been a heavy social media user, even I find myself doom-scrolling on random platforms from time to time. For example, often first thing in the morning, I’ll pick up my phone and mindlessly scroll through content I can’t recall 20 minutes later.
I believe a dumbphone will prevent me from engaging in this behavior and, in turn, help me increase my level of focus and mental clarity.
I like how low friction my phone is to use. If I want to call somebody, I just open it up and start typing their name in T9. It looks them up, finds their number, and then I just press a button and I’m calling them.
The advantage of having a special purpose device is that it is probably configured to be very good at that purpose. Smartphones are annoying because they try to do everything, and are largely bad at everything as a result. After a few years of using my dumbphone, trying to do much of anything on a smartphone is painful. My dumbphone is so much better at being a phone, and my computer is so much better at being a computer (email, internet, etc.)
I only need calls and text, which my Nokia 225 does well. However, when traveling having gps and wifi can be quit helpful in some situations. I found that I would bring my smartphone along (turned off) just in case. My Cingular Flex 2 has both gps and wifi, so now the smartphone never goes along
